This week the weather was perfect! The weather was clear after days of Canadian forest fire smoke, temperatures were in the low 80’s and the winds were 7-9 knots out of the North or
North-Northwest. Alas, three of our regulars, Jay, Brad and Mark, were out of commission, but four still made it to the starting line on time, Jim, Brian, Tom and Tim.

With the strong wind on the West end of the lake, jockeying before the start was a challenge. Unfortunately, Brian crossed the start a boat-length before the horn and had to circle back
around, putting him at the back of the pack. Starting order therefore was Jim, Tim, Tom and Brian.

With the consistent wind, and sailors of similar experience, the order of the four boats was very fluid. Jim led around Buoys # 1 and 2, Tim around Buoy #’s 4 and 5, Tom led around Buoy #3
with less than 100 yards between the four boats.

With the four boats in a pack rounding Buoy #3, it was a sprint to the finish line. The wind had shifted to the Northwest in the East end of the lake, so just after leaving Buoy #3 it appeared the boats would have to tack to the finish line, but the wind shifted as the boats approached the island. Tim and Brian managed to stay with the wind and avoid a tacking. Jim wasn’t able to
clear the island on the South shore and had to tack. Tom, having been able all day to sail higher into the wind than the other boats took a more direct line and was caught in the wind shadow of
Welcome Island. The finish order was Tim at 49 minute, 20 seconds, with Brian, Jim and Tom close behind.
